Spreading Joy with Tim Holt and PolyArt in Guatemala
September 18 – 25 Guatemala City, Guatemala
Sometimes my experience selling complex commercial communications programs has some unexpected benefits. This “custom application” using durable PolyArt synthetic paper, yarn, and stickers had to be my favorite of the year. In September, my daughter Lauren and I traveled to Guatemala City on a week-long mission trip with Hope Lutheran Church of Wake Forest, NC.
Our mission was to provide education and comfort to the families supported by Groundwork Guatemala. They put together programs that partner church groups with local Guatemalan missionaries. Our group was asked to bring supplies and instructions for a craft project working with children to create a megaphone that they could use to proclaim their unabashed (and loud!) joy.

Developing the design of our megaphones and transporting the supplies to Guatemala was a bit of a challenge. We originally thought about laminating paper megaphones so that they would last a few extra days in the children’s hands, but the cost and weight of laminated sheets made them less than ideal. Then I thought of PolyArt, a synthetic printing stock, which is both less bulky and more durable than a laminated sheet.
The megaphones turned out great, and the children enjoyed assembling them with yarn and decorating them with stickers. It was a craft that brought together young and old, American and Guatemalan.
I’d like to extend our many thanks to Arjobex (Frank Fogle) and Mac Papers (Phil Starnes) for their kind and generous support.
