Classic Employees Come Bearing Gifts For CMPD’s Explorer Post Christmas Project

Dec. 15, 2014, Charlotte, NC - Classic took part in supporting Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Departments’ annual Explorer Post Christmas Project raising $1,340 in cash, checks and grocery store gift cards as well as barrels of toys. In the days leading up to the pickup on Monday, December 15th by the CMPD, Classic employees were seen busily bringing in dolls and a myriad of toys as well as cash donations.

The Explorer Post Christmas Project was started in 1974 with the police department helping 15 families. In 2013, the Explorers Post helped nearly 700 families and 2,000 children. CMPD works with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system guidance counselors, family advisors and social workers to identify children who receive breakfast and lunch at school. This year is very significant because it’s the CMPD’s Explorer Post Christmas’s Projects’ 40th Anniversary whereby the CMPD created partnerships with the Charlotte Fire Department, Salvation Army, and Toys for Tots and the Link 107.9. These partnerships have allowed CMPD to provide Christmas to their referred families from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and assist families with emergency situations that occur during the holiday season. After meeting their goal with serving their referred families, the CMPD plans to assist the Salvation Army with their mission of providing Christmas to over 13,000 children in the community.

When these children are out of school for the two week Christmas break; it puts a strain on the parent, grandparent and/or guardian to provide for the children. Gift cards for grocery shopping, cash and gifts for each of the children in the family are provided for the holidays. These are children who normally would wake up on Christmas morning with no gifts under the Christmas tree or a Christmas dinner.

“Helping families in our community is very important to our employees,” remarked Lynn Pitts who in addition to her role as Quality Control Director spearheads community outreach causes at Classic. “Classic has proudly been supporting the CMPD Explorer Post Christmas Project now for the past three years” added Pitts.
